THE 4Cs OF A DIAMOND

4Cs of a Diamond.jpg

The cut of a diamond determines its shape and is extremely important to its overall beauty. Cut is often considered the most important characteristic of the 4 C’s. This is because it has the biggest impact on the diamond’s overall appearance and quality.

Color  refers to the diamond’s lack of color. The less color, the higher the grade of the diamond. The GIA established a color scale in 1953 to create the standard for determining diamond color.   The scale runs from D to Z, with D signifying the clearest color.

CLARITY

Clarity measures the purity of the diamond and the presence (or absence) of tiny flaws. The clearer or more flaw free the diamond, the more brilliant and valuable it becomes. All diamonds are graded based on their clarity. Grading is determined by closely examining the diamond under 10X magnification.

CARAT

Carat is also called carat weight because it refers to how much a diamond weighs rather than how big the diamond is. Carat has the biggest effect on the price.

Ring Size

If you're not sure of their size and don't want to ask, borrow a ring they already have and get it sized at a jewelry store. Another option would be to ask a friend or family member to help do some trying on with your partner to get a rough size. If you aren't able to do any of the above before you shop for the engagement ring, check with the jeweler that the ring you choose is able to be resized.

PLANNING AHEAD

Unless you’re buying a preset engagement ring, your jeweler will need some time to place your desired diamond in your engagement ring’s setting. Additionally, some engagement rings are made only after you order, which can take a bit of time. So, to make sure you have your engagement ring by the date you want to propose, order your ring well in advance. A good rule of thumb is to order 6 weeks in advance, which gives you plenty of breathing room, but consult with your jeweler on the exact time it may take for your ring to be completed.

KNOWING YOUR PARTNER PREFERENCE STYLE

Take mental notes of the jewelry they already wear and what their style is like. This will also help you to determine which metal to go for - are they a silver, gold, or rose gold type of person? Asking your other half’s best friend or a close family member can be very helpful they should know exactly what style of ring they'd like based on conversations. Pay attention to any hints.

If you're determined to get it right and have absolutely no clue, you could ask your partner what their dream ring would be.
